House Progress: The Power of Paint!

A few weeks ago I showed you what our house looked like when we first moved in! It’s only been three months since our closing, but it’s already looking SO different thanks to a few coats of paint.

The first thing we wanted to tackle was painting the living room, dining area, and the kitchen since they are what you first see when you walk into the house. Paint is my kind of project because it is one of the easiest ways to make a big impact without having to spend a ton of money, and I was dying to get rid of the creamy yellow that was in almost every single room!

So let’s chat about paint colors real quick. I decided to do a shade of white to take advantage of all of our natural light and give the room a fresh look. We also wanted to paint the fireplace white, but have just enough contrast between the brick and the walls. So now we were faced with the dilemma of choosing not only 1 shade of white, but 2! And if you know anything about white paint colors you know there is just waaaay too many to choose from.

Every time we would go to Lowes I would stare at the wall of paint chips and pick up a bunch to add to my growing collection. I started narrowing them down until I had 3 that I liked. We landed on Sherwin Williams Pure White, Valspar Mineral Ash, and Valspar Cool Gray.  Next step was to get samples of each to test out on the walls.

Paint samples are a MUST! Paint colors can look so different once you put them on the wall, and even look different wall to wall depending on the lighting in the room. So we got our three samples and I went to town testing them out on a few different walls.

Here is where we landed. We ended up painting the fireplace the same white as the trim. The previous owners had left a few gallons behind so not only did they save us a few dollars, but by keeping only 2 shades of white in the room we could avoid colors clashing. Then for the walls, we went with Valspar Cool Gray. It had just the right amount of contrast against the fireplace and didn’t feel too stark.

Here’s a look at the before and after, and a few behind the scenes shots.

We had a ton of paint leftover from the living/dining areas, so I decided to use it in my office as well. Here’s how this space turned out.

Guys, I feel like we are in a completely different house, and all we did was PAINT! Of course we’ve got a ton of other projects on our list, but watching our house turn into our home over these past few months has been a dream come true! Nothing makes me happier than being able to gather with family around our dining table, or lounge in the living room with friends for a movie night.

Now I’m off to our next painting project…the front door! Have a great weekend friends!

Come Take a Tour of Our New House!

We have been in our new-ish house for almost three months now, and I want to take a sec to hit rewind and show you guys what it looked like the first day we saw it!

The funny thing is that before we walked into this house we weren’t even 100% sure that we were ready to buy. We had about 4 months left of our apartment lease and knew that we didn’t want to continue renting it, so we started weighing out all of the options. Do we rent another apartment or townhouse, do we see if we are financially ready to buy a house, do we even stay in Charlotte? For months my mind was spinning!! I really just wanted to find somewhere that we could put roots down for the next 5+ years, but I wasn’t sure what that was going to look like for us.

We decided to sit down with a mortgage company to take a look at our options and by the end of the hour, we were told to start house shopping. I remember as we drove home I was screeching like a little girl with tears welling up in my eyes knowing that a dream of owning our own house was closer than I thought.  The second I got home I started looking at ALLLL the current house listings!

The market was really hot so houses were going FAST! Most of the houses in our target location were pending, so when I came across our house I knew we had to jump on it ASAP!! The next day we set up a time to get a tour and I was in LOVE the second we stepped inside. It has everything we were looking for and more – a nice big lot, midcentury character, good bones, an outdoor space, a fireplace, hardwoods, and the most beautiful natural light.

So there it is! We’ve definitely got our plates full of projects over the next year and I can guarantee that Google and YouTube will become our best friends as we try and navigate this new home ownership thing. But so far we are loving every second of living here and I can’t wait to bring you guys along as we turn it into our own!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be telling you about our plans for each space and give you a look at what we’ve done so far, so stay tuned!

Hope you have a great weekend friends!

My Home Office Space

A few months ago I told you all about how I was on the hunt to find the perfect solution for a small office space that we could set up in our apartment for me to work from on a daily basis (see post HERE). I searched all over the web to find the perfect desk that wouldn’t take up too much space, and in the end chose the Sawyer Leaning Desk from Crate and Barrel. What initially drew me to this piece was its modern lines and lighter finish which doesn’t make the desk seem bulky. 10 Ideas for Small Home Offices

Hey Friends! Today I wanted to share 10 Ideas for Small Home Offices. Apartment living can be challenging when it comes to finding the proper furniture pieces that have the right scale and functionality. Earlier this year my husband Jacob and I both transitioned into working from home. It’s been a little bit of an adjustment for us, especially with living in a one bedroom apartment. We have a desk in our dining area for Jacob to work at, and I usually work from the sofa. As much as I love working from the sofa with our pup next to me, it’s not the most productive spot for me to get my work done.

We’ve come up with a plan to set up a another desk area in our bedroom so that the two of us can have our own little space to work. I am on the hunt to find a solution for us to create a small work space. Something that won’t take up too much room or look to bulky in our little apartment bedroom. Here’s 10 inspiration photos that have some great ideas for small work spaces!
